MASTERING

What Is It & Why Is It Essential?

Mastering is the final stage of post-production, where a completed stereo mix is refined & optimised for consistent playback across different systems & formats. It prepares audio for release by addressing tonal balance, dynamics & overall level in line with industry standards.

Effective mastering ensures that a mix translates reliably across a wide range of listening environments, from high-end monitoring systems to consumer playback devices. It also ensures consistency across tracks & creates a definitive audio version for distribution.

The final master serves as the reference for all physical & digital releases, making it a critical step in the professional delivery of any audio project.

MY EXPERIENCE

Why Should I Master Your Work?

I hold a Bachelor of Music & Sound Design from the University of Technology Sydney, where mastering formed a core component of my training across music & post-production projects. This included mastering work across a wide range of genres & developing a practical understanding of tonal balance, loudness management, & translation.

As part of my studies, I completed projects involving mastering multiple tracks to a deadline, reinforcing the importance of consistency, efficiency, & attention to detail in a post-production workflow. These skills carry directly into my professional approach to mastering.

In addition to academic & collaborative work, I master all of my own music & audio projects, with selected examples available throughout this site.

MY APPROACH

How Will I Master Your Work?

My approach to mastering is guided by three core principles:

1) Appropriate Level & Delivery Standards: Each master is prepared to meet the technical & loudness requirements of its intended format.

2) Subtle Enhancement & Consistency: Mastering decisions are made with restraint, focusing on tonal balance, dynamics & overall cohesion rather than heavy processing. The goal is to enhance the mix while preserving its character & intent.

3) Creative Intent: Every master is developed in alignment with the client’s creative vision, ensuring technical adjustments serve the material rather than alter it unnecessarily.

I approach mastering with consistency & attention to detail, aiming to deliver reliable translation across playback systems while maintaining the integrity of the original mix.
